Kaylee Hutchens, Hairdresser, Hair Salon Coordinator

Kaylee Hutchens is a newly qualified hairdresser who began her apprenticeship at just 17, while still in high school. Inspired by a natural passion for hair and early experiences styling her sister, she pursued VET courses through Clip Joint before commencing her apprenticeship at Cemons in Magill. Starting her career during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges, including delays and limited client interaction—but through resilience and determination, Kaylee emerged more committed than ever to the profession she loves. Although she completed trade school early due to her VET credits, Kaylee took additional time to build her confidence and gain more hands-on client experience. With the support of an encouraging employer and her vibrant, outgoing personality, she successfully developed a strong and loyal clientele.

Eager to grow beyond the salon floor, Kaylee enrolled in the Extending the Curve in Salon Management program delivered by The French Beauty Academy. This initiative supports the career progression of hairdressers and barbers post-apprenticeship, encouraging them to stay and thrive in the industry. Drawn by her interest in salon operations—from stock control to administration—Kaylee found the course's structured, flexible format particularly well-suited to her learning style. She especially valued the weekly Zoom sessions and in-depth content on Workplace Health and Safety, which she was able to apply directly in her salon, sparking meaningful improvements and conversations.

The program significantly boosted Kaylee’s professional confidence, elevated her authority within the team, and deepened her understanding of best practice salon operations. Now, she’s determined to complete the full Diploma of Salon Management and has aspirations to one day lead her own salon or mentor others in the field.

Her message to her younger self during those tough early days?
“You’re doing better than you think—keep going.”
